You Are Not Alone: Marking National Widows Day in Ontario

Published on 3 May 2026 at 11:00

May 3 is National Widows Day – a day that often passes quietly for many, but for those of us in the widowed community, it carries great weight.

Whether you are navigating your first few months of “the new normal” or you’ve been on this road for years, this day is about acknowledging the unique, often invisible journey of losing a partner.

Living here in the Waterloo Wellington region, we are lucky to have a community that truly steps up when things get tough. But I also know that when you’re grieving, even a simple Google search for help can feel like climbing Mount Everest.

Why This Day Matters

National Widows Day isn’t just about the sadness of loss; it’s about the strength it takes to keep going. It’s about the legal hurdles, the solo parenting, the quiet houses, and the incredible resilience I see every day in my work. It’s a reminder that while your partner is gone, your place in our community is as vital as ever.

Local Support Near You

If you are looking for a place where you don’t have to explain your grief, we have some world-class resources right in our backyard:

  • Soaring Spirits Canada: A truly wonderful organization (and a personal favourite). They host Regional Social Groups right here in Ontario, and their incredible Camp Widow® event is coming to Toronto from May 29-31, 2026. It’s a life-changing weekend of connection.
  • Bereaved Families of Ontario Midwestern Region: Based right in Kitchener at The Family Centre, they offer peer-led support groups specifically for spousal loss. There is something so healing about talking to someone who “gets it”.
  • Hospice Wellington: Located in Guelph, they provide beautiful one-on-one and group grief support services for anyone in the Wellington County area, regardless of whether you used their hospice services.
  • Hummingbird Centre for Hope: A local gem that focuses specifically on supporting widowed parents and their children in the KW area.

A Note to Our Community

If you know a widow today – whether they are 30 or 80 – reach out. You don’t need a grand gesture. A text that says “I’m thinking of you and [partner’s name] today” or dropping off a coffee from a local shop can mean the world.

To my fellow widows in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and Guelph: I see you. You are doing a hard thing, and you are doing it with more grace than you realize.
